When I was in High School I took sign language and I've always had a passion for it and would love to do something with it. One of my teachers signed to her kids when they were 6 months old and even though they couldn't sign back, they could understand her a little bit more. Ever since I took sign language classes and seeing my teacher communicate with her young children, I thought it would be neat to teach my kids sign language.
So I've been teaching Olivia some sign language since she was 9 months old and she started picking it up at 10 months. This is a way for her and me to communicate to each other. I know a lot of mothers are skeptic about signing to their kids because their afraid they won't talk when their older. But that's not the case for Olivia, she talks all the time. She says something while doing the sign, so I don't worry about it. When I get her in the morning we read a couple books and then she usually turns to me and does the sign for eat and says "eettaa". (Obviously she is hungry when she wakes up for breakfast) but I love watching her learn signs and using them when she needs something to tell me. She knows, eat, please, thank you, more, milk, and all done. And we've been working on some more.
